Cup Defeat for Guildford Goats

Victories over the Cranleigh Ravens and the Epsom Rockets earned Guildford a semi-final matchup against the Kingston Wildcat second team. Guildford started well, carrying forward some of the strong form showed in the previous weeks league victory against Mole Valley. Both teams traded blow for blow in the games first half, with the score tied at 38 a piece coming into the break. Kingston came out strong in the second half, shutting Guildford down on defence and opening up a 12 point lead. Guildford found their rhythm towards the end of the third quarter, but were unable to make an headway into the lead. Kingstons strong play continued into the fourth quarter, and with Guildford unable to answer pulled out a comfortable lead and won the game 93-73. It's a loss the Guildford squad will soon have to put behind them, with all still to play for in the Surrey Men's league.

Going Strong in the Surrey League

Last Thursday saw the Guildford Goats looking to extend their season long wining streak to 10 games in a Spectrum matchup against league rivals, the Mole Valley Phoenix. The Guildford squad came out strong, pushing the pace of the game, hitting their shots and attacking the basket. Their hard work and good basketball resulted in a 40-25 point half time lead. Mole Valley were far from finished, and started the second half with some full court pressure and excellent defence. 10 straight unanswered points put them back at Guildford's heels, although the Guildford squad managed to rally from this poor start to the third quarter, and pulled back to an eight point lead coming into the fourth. Mole Valley started the fourth quarter with another push, but Guildford managed to counter by attacking the basket, getting to the foul line and slowing the pace of the game. Despite some dubious foul shooting, the lead was stretched and Guildford finished victorious, 68-52. Guildford were lead by 18 points from Glenn Harrop (MVP), 16 from Owen Cook and 12 from Oscar Wilkins.
